In what he called one of his ‘most important days’ in politics, popular opposition figure Zitto Kabwe has aligned with opposition political party Alliance for Change and Transparency (ACT) after being booted from Chama Cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo (CHADEMA.)

Kabwe, who identifies as a socialist, says ACT is the only party in Tanzania which stands close to his ideologies of returning the nation to Tanzania’s roots as envisioned by first president Julius Nyerere.

Tanzania is at a crossroads, Kabwe says, where people need to question practices and decide what kind of a country they want.

“It is time we ask ourselves and find answers of the kind of the country that we want to build. For us, ACT have found that it is time to go back to the future. Let the new beginning begin,” says Kabwe.

Kabwe says he was attracted by ACT’s values, which include putting national interests such as accountability above everything else.

“Transparency is part of the party’s name. All these qualities have made me feel that I won’t feel like an outsider in this party.”

Kabwe says he’s done talking about his political friction with his old party and wants to move forward.

“This is exactly my home politically and in my public service.”
