Without providing any proof, a Tanzanian opposition party has alleged that the ruling party and security forces were plotting the assassination of it’s secretary general, Dr. Wilbrod Slaa.
The Chama Cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo (Chadema) party claims to have evidence supporting allegations that a member of Slaa’s personal security was colluding with the Tanzania Intelligence and Security Services (TISS) and high ranking members of the ruling party, Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM.)
The mole, “was colluding with top CCM leaders and state security officers to kill Slaa,” says Chadema national governing council member Mabele Marando.
The plan was to poison Slaa, says Marando, identifying the mole as security officer Khalid Kagenzi, who is responsible for checking the safety of Slaa’s food and water.
“We have documents showing [Kagenzi] was in frequent communication with almost 22 officers from TISS” says Marando, noting that would be, “contrary to his job ethics.”
Speaking at a press conference Sunday, Marando also accuses Kagenzi of communicating with CCM deputy chairman for Mainland Philip Mangula for the past two years, alleging that Mangula even sent the suspect up to 200,000 TSH in airtime vouchers.
“Kagenzi was also paid to leak crucial information to CCM. He admitted that CCM deputy chairman Mangula wanted him to provide information from Chadema’s central committee meeting.”
The party says their investigation also revealed Kagenzi received 7 million TSH from security agencies since December 2014.
At first, Kagenzi denied the allegations, says Marando, “but after long interrogations with party security officers he finally admitted the plot.”
Kinondoni Regional Police Commander Camilius Wambura confirmed that Kagenzi has been arrested, however says “it is just too early to give any further information.”
Chadema has not released the alleged evidence and requests by Dar Post to see the evidence have also been unsuccessful.
Attempts by media to reach CCM deputy chairman Mangula have also been unsuccessful.
