Further details of Tuesday’s raid which netted 10 suspected militants 350 kilometres from Dar Es Salaam have emerged.

Police arrested 10 men at a mosque in Kilombero district on Tuesday night in possession of weapons, explosives, uniforms and a black flag.

One of the 10 men was shot in the foot, but further resisted arrest and proceeded to slash an officer in the neck with a sword.

According to the Citizen newspaper, angry locals in Kidatu ward then lynched the suspect, lit him on fire and killed him.

The officer is being treated for his injuries in hospital.

Morogoro regional police chief Leonard Paul Lwabuzala says they believe the men, who have yet to be identified, were planning to commit a felony.

Lwabuzala says it was a tip from the public that alerted them to the suspects.

Kidatu ward councillor Asajile Mwasumbi says more suspects might have escaped in the night-time raid and appealed for the public to help find them.
