Even if the rains have stopped malaria cases are on the rise this month, nearly doubling numbers detected in May.

In June 54 cases have already been diagnosed at the IST Clinic.

“During May 2015, 30 new malaria cases were diagnosed at IST clinic,” says Dr. Belia Klaassen.

“Malaria prophylaxis can also be taken for the coming weeks while there are still many mosquitoes present, even if the rains have stopped.”

Be alert and get tested early if you have malaria symptoms of high fevers above 39º Celsius,  headaches, shivering and muscle pain.

Klaassen says those traveling abroad should take along a self test kit and a course of antimalarial medication.
