No, the EU does not bash candidates

A hoax message circulating on social media about the EU cautioning against a presidential candidate.

It’s a hoax, folks.

A statement circulated on social media claiming the European Union will cut funding if a certain candidate is chosen to run for the presidential office is nothing but fiction.

“The EU Delegation rejects categorically the information circulating on social media alleging that the EU Ambassador has given a press conference commenting on election candidate,” says the European Union (EU.)

According to the poorly written fake statement, the EU would withdraw ‘foreign support’ to Tanzanian development projects if ruling party Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) backed candidate Edward Lowassa.

Lowassa, who was Prime Miniser of Tanzania from 2005 to 2008 resigned from the post amid the Richmond scandal, saying at the time that he felt his credibility was tarnished.

The Richmond scandal was an energy contract which was found to have been tilted in favour of a US firm and implicated several high level officials.

“The EU Ambassador has given no such press conference or expressed any views on the above,” says the EU in a statement on their Facebook page.
