The governments of Canada and the United States have issued reactions to the decision to nullify Zanzibar’s election process.

On Wednesday October 28, the chairman of the Zanzibar Electoral Commission declared that the election results would be scrapped due to irregularities.

“The United States government is gravely alarmed … This action halted an orderly and peaceful election,” says a statement on the website of the US embassy in Tanzania.

“We call for this announcement to be recalled and urge all parties to maintain a commitment to a transparent and peaceful democratic process. The people of Zanzibar deserve that,” says the statement.

On Twitter, Canada’s high commissioner tweeted that all Canadians in Zanzibar should stay indoors and monitor the situation.

As of Wednesday evening, queries by Dar Post found that Stone Town was calm.

Prior to Wednesday’s announcement by Zanzibar, the European Union election observation mission had assessed the situation in Zanzibar to be mostly positive.

The EU has yet to issue a statement concerning the recent developments.
