Streaming service Netflix is now available in Tanzania and in over 190 countries around the world, but some shows on Netflix may be unavailable in Tanzania due to regional licensing restrictions.
“Today you are witnessing the birth of a new global Internet TV network,” said Netflix co-founder and chief executive Reed Hastings.
“With the help of the Internet, we are putting power in consumers’ hands to watch whenever, wherever and on whatever device,” says Hastings.
However the Netflix website warns that some shows may not be available in every region due to licensing restrictions.
Last year, Hastings told Gizmodo Australia that he wants to see Netflix content become region-free and equal for all users worldwide in the future, but that is not yet the case.
Hastings also says in some countries, limited internet availability continues to be a challenge.
“In some of the emerging economies it will only be people in urban areas that will be able to use [Netflix] because of limited internet availability.”
Netflix offers a catalog of licensed TV shows, movies and Netflix original series for a monthly price.
Due to US law, Netflix is not available in China, Crimea, North Korea and Syria.
