The carcass of a poached male black rhino was found in the Maasai Mara just 300 metres across the Kenyan border on Sunday.
“[The rhino] appeared to have come from the Serengeti side in Tanzania as indicated in the trail in the disturbed long grass,” says Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) communication manager Paul Udoto, quoted by Kenya’s Citizen TV.
Udoto says the rhino, named Temple, was likely killed on Friday, February 5.
Temple’s range covered both Kenya’s Maasai Mara National Reserve and the adjacent Serengeti National Park in Tanzania.
Temple is the first rhino to be killed in Kenya in 2016; 11 rhinos were killed in Kenya last year.
A joint KWS and Tanzania National Parks Authority (TANAPA) investigation is underway to track the poachers.
