The situation in Zanzibar has been calm and quiet on Sunday (March 20) as Zanzibaris heads to the polls again.
“It’s my right, and I believe I have to choose the [party] I want,” says a voter exiting a quiet polling station in Darajani.
Streets have been quiet and many shops remain shuttered as the day goes on.
The October 2015 election results were controversially scrapped due to irregularities and the main opposition party, the Civic United Front, has boycotted the re-run.
In the weeks leading up to the re-run there were several incidences of violence targeting both the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi party as well as the opposition.
Days before the election, journalist Salma Said went missing.
Said sent a text message to her husband saying security forces had detained her at Abeid Amani Karume International Airport however police continue to deny having any knowledge about the incident.
