Incumbent president Ali Mohamed Shein has been declared the winner of Sunday’s election re-run in Zanzibar.
The ambassadors from over a dozen countries immediately reiterated their stance that the re-run was not a ‘mutually acceptable and negotiated solution to the current political impasse.’
“In order to be credible, electoral processes must be inclusive and truly representative of the will of the people,” the statement says.
The Zanzibar Electoral Commission (ZEC) says Shein won with 91.4 percent of the vote.
The Alliance for Democratic Change (ADC) came in second, with 3 percent of the vote, while the main opposition party, the Civic United Front (CUF) boycotted the re-run.
Zanzibar police commissioner Hamdani Makame says Sunday’s re-run went without major incident or arrests.
The October 2015 election results were controversially scrapped due to irregularities.
