The Republic of South Sudan is now a member of the East African Community (EAC.)

South Sudan’s president Salva Kiir was in Dar on Friday (April 15) to sign the final documents with president John Magufuli, who is also chairman of the EAC.

In March, Magufuli warned that the EAC would not tolerate any violence and that only a peaceful South Sudan would be beneficial to the community.

South Sudan had applied for EAC membership at independence in 2011, but was declined at the time.

The EAC is now made up of six countries: Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, South Sudan, Rwanda and Burundi.
