Country-wide protests scheduled for Thursday, September 1, have been postponed by opposition party Chadema.

Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday afternoon, party chairman Freeman Mbowe says they’ve postponed all meetings and planned Ukuta protests for a month.

Ukuta is an acronym for Alliance Against Dictatorship in Tanzania.

“It was a difficult decision to reach,” says Mbowe, who says over 250 party members have been charged with sedition.

Police had banned the proposed demonstrations and threatened to use violence should protesters take to the streets.

This is a complex political issue: for a more in-depth look at the situation, read this article.
