Driving toward the airport? Get ready to add some extra travel time to your already long commute as construction on the Tazara junction flyover ramps up.

The first phase of construction — temporary diversion roads — at the junction of Nyerere and Nelson Mandela Roads is already underway.

Construction on the four-lane, 425 meter flyover is expected to get underway in earnest in October 2016.

The Japan-funded flyover is expected to take 35 months to build.

When it’s finally finished, The Tanzania National Roads Agency says they think the flyover will reduce travel time to the airport by 80 percent.

According to The Citizen, it’s estimated that Dar’s traffic jams account for approximately four billion shillings in wasted fuel and lost worker productivity every day.
