Construction of the new Selander Bridge is expected to begin in June 2017, says the State House.

“Plans to set up the Selander Bridge flyover are going well. The Korean company that has been conducting the feasibility study is in the final stages of its mission,” says President John Magufuli in a press release issued by the State House.

Magufuli says construction of the 1.4 kilometer long bridge is to be complete in 2020.

The bridge will pass over Msimbazi bay from Kenyatta drive to Barack Obama Drive near Aga Khan Hospital.

Last year, the government signed a $91 million USD (154 billion TSH) loan for the construction of the bridge and 7 kilometers of road upgrades to connect Msasani to the downtown core.

Eighty three percent of the project costs are a concessional loan from South Korea’s Exim Bank and seventeen percent will be covered by the government of Tanzania.

Selander bridge was first constructed in 1929 and the current four-lane bridge was built in 1980.

It is named after Tanganyika’s first director of public works, John Selander.
