As tourists enter the Selous and Ruaha, a steady stream of recyclable trash is being transported back to Dar.

The Selous Safari Company has teamed up with The Recycler – a waste management company in Dar — to reduce their waste and efficiently recycle as much as possible.

At their camps are deep in the bush, staff have been trained on the importance of reducing, reusing and recycling as well as taking care of the environment.

In just seven months, over 1,000 glass bottles, over 3,400 plastic bottles and over 270 kilograms of paper have been hauled out of the park and recycled.

Let’s put it another way: recycling just one glass bottle can conserve enough energy to run a computer for 25 minutes, and recycling one plastic bottle saves the equivalent amount of energy needed to light a 60-watt bulb for up to six hours.

In addition to recycling, the company is also working on reducing the number of plastic bottles needed by filtering their own drinking water at some of their camps.

“We are happy to see companies with such commitment as the Selous Safari Company who go above and beyond to protect the environment. If we want to keep the natural beauty of Tanzania, we need to reduce our waste and recycle as much as possible,” says Matthew Haden, of The Recycler.
