Oui, Oui, it’s Francophonie

Francophonie week kicks of with a free concert by The Mighty Popo, a Rwandan-Canadian musician, on Monday March 20.

From March 20 to 26, it’s Francophonie week in Dar — and there are free movies, concerts and even a football tournament for you to enjoy.

The 11 French-speaking embassies in Dar are offering a variety of free activities open to the public so check out the events here.

Tanzania has about 1.5 million French speakers and shares its land borders with three Francophone countries, not to mention nearby Indian Ocean countries of Madagascar, Mauritius, Seychelles and The Union of the Comoros.

French is also the only foreign language other than English to be offered in the Tanzanian school curriculum.

Over 50 percent of the world’s French speakers are Africans.
