A total of 9932 civil servants were ordered to be fired in a live-streamed broadcast from Dodoma on Friday, April 28.

A total of 2.4 percent of civil servants were found to have fake secondary school certificates, says Angellah Kairuki, Minister of State in the President’s Office for Public Service Management and Good Governance.

The findings are the result of a task force set up by the President to weed out officials with fake credentials.

The results of the review show 94.23 percent of the employees have valid certificates,” says  Kairuki, who presented the report.

The final report lists the names and workplaces of all 9932 local government, public institution and government agency workers with fake certificates.

Pending review, the salaries of over 3000 more civil servants are also being withheld.

“They are thieves like any other thieves… You can not perform if you don’t have deserving qualifications,” says President John Magufuli.

The fired civil servants are expected to face legal proceedings and may face up to seven years in prison.
