Yuandong

There’s something to be said about a restaurant that can hide in plain sight. Situated in a converted house in Upanga on Ali Hassan Mwinyi Rd, many people drive past this hidden gem every day without knowing it.

Seriously, when describing it to friends, it is inexplicably difficult for no good reason. Thankfully, a Chinese business hotel has opened up next door, which provides a good flashy landmark.

Yuandong. This is the place you’re looking for.

I confess, I hesitated writing a review about Yuandong, because I secretly want to keep it all to myself.

There is nothing fancy or pretentious about Yuandong, and that’s what makes it so good. Most of the patrons are regulars, the servers have been there for years and the reasonably-priced food is probably best described as “hole in the wall.” And that’s a good thing. It’s authentic.

Unfortunately, Yuandong suffers the same problem as many restaurants in Dar, which is the lack of available ingredients. So some menu items are subject to availability and occasionally you’ll find your beef noodle soup being made with spaghetti noodles. Yes, spaghetti. It’s still good though.

But don’t let that dissuade you: let the fried dumplings (number 16 on the Chinese menu), the sweet and sour pork or the smashed cucumber salad convince you.

A personal favourite of mine is the impossible to describe Chinese matambele (number 10 on the Chinese menu.) So simple, so good.

Better yet, take a peek at some of the other tables and order whatever catches your fancy.

In addition to the restaurant, there’s a small grocery store around back and a souvenir shop on the side.
