Cashless in Dar

For 30 days, I’ll be going cashless in Dar. Will it be possible? Photo: contributed

On June 1 I’ll wake up and leave the house without a single shilling in my pocket to pilot my #CashLessChallenge for 30 days.

My girlfriend is used to my crazy ideas — she didn’t fully support or oppose — but her look confirmed this is one of those.

One difficultly will be that my girlfriend banks in Europe and I cover our living expenses here to avoid exchange rate losses.

But I won’t be able to give cash anymore — so I’ll have to get my girlfriend a mobile wallet and an ATM card if I want to give her any money this month.

I was inspired by the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goal number 9.

Among the targets are an increase the access of small-scale industrial and other enterprises, in particular in developing countries, to FINANCIAL SERVICES, including affordable credit, and their integration into value chains and markets.

So I will publicly record every electronic transaction I successfully — or NOT  — make while going about my usual errands.

The challenge will serve as a forum to gauge and promote the latest advances in digital payment technologies, systems, and applicability.

I am still looking for financial service providers — banks with mobile banking, VISA or Mastercard issuers, mobile money wallets — to help me out with me on this challenge.

All of the above must have ZERO transaction fees on merchant purchase.

As this is the first time this has been done, I open to ideas and recommendations: partners@cashlesschallenge.com
