Maxence Melo, founder of popular online hangout JamiiForums, has reportedly been detained by police in Dar.

According to a tweet by JamiiForums on Tuesday afternoon, Melo was detained after refusing to divulge user data.

Melo is an outspoken critic of the Cybercrime act and says it’s a sign that the government wants to stifle public conversation and debate.

“The law is there to monitor all social networks,”  Melo said in an interview with Dar Post last year.

JamiiForums is said to receive about 16,000 visitors a day.
