Cafe Aroma

Whoops, sorry. I took a few sips before remembering to take a photo.

One word: waffles. That alone should have you running to Cafe Aroma.

Never mind the cafe is in a fuel station and you’ll be fighting traffic both ways to get there. There are soft, fluffy waffles to be had. And bagels. Honest to goodness bagels. And frappes and really good coffee.

Cafe Aroma is a great place to stop if you’re stuck in traffic commuting, or if you happen to live in Upanga. The cafe is inside the Puma fuel station on Ocean Road (Barack Obama Drive.)

The first thing I noticed when I passed the fuel pumps and opened the door to Cafe Aroma was the cold blast of air conditioning. They’ve got the AC cranked up and it feels so good!

The second thing to hit is the aroma: coffee. A good coffee is surprisingly hard to find in Dar, and this is one of the good ones. The coffee has a strong kick and yet it’s not bitter or burned.

The bagels (around 8000 TSH) can be loaded with your choice of cream cheese, egg and cheese, spanish omelette, choco banana, peanut butter or strawberry cheesecake.

I’ve left my favourite for last: the breakfast bagel. Egg, cheese, tomato and avocado for 8500 TSH. It’s the perfect breakfast. Strangely enough I don’t have a photo of it, because I always take a bite or three before remembering.

The waffles (around 13000 TSH) follow a similar scrumptious path and can be loaded with any number of glorious toppings. I’ll let you discover them for yourself.

A word about frappes: there are some seasonal drinks and specials which don’t appear on the menu but can be made if you ask. Mango frappe? Strawberry frappe? Don’t mind if I do!

As you sit in the cool AC, you’ll be forgiven for forgetting exactly where you are. Before you stumble back out into the humid, wild adventure that is Dar, take one last sip of your coffee and take a deep breath of Cafe Aroma.

  1. I love Cafe Aroma, especially the strawberry frappe! The cafe is almost always full, so I wish there was more seating.
